ZBrush for Season 6 Game of Thrones dagger

Hi all,

Thought I’d post this up now that episode 1 of season 6 has aired. While I’m sure everyone is aware that ZBrush is used throughout the film and television industry, sometimes it’s in places you might not suspect.

Spoiler alert for those who haven’t seen Ep 1 yet

For example, when Prince Doran was killed in Episode 1, it was with a dagger that was sculpted in ZBrush and 3D printed. It was then painted up, with jewels and a leather strap added.

I was asked to sculpt the dagger based on a drawing provided by Weapons Master Tommy Dunne, and to make sure it came in 3 pieces which could assembled later (stabbing with real knives, plastic or not, is generally frowned upon by the person receiving the stab).

To do this, I used ZBrush to model the dagger itself, Keyshot to provide him with renders throughout the process, and the online 3D printing service Shapeways to do the print itself. The blade, head and body were all separated out and booleaned from each other so it would fit together nicely.

Shapeways did a great job with the 3D print making sure that all of the parts fit together and that it was expedited quickly and professionally. Here’s a sample of the 3D print from Shapeways, in their Frosted Ultra Detail material. They’ve also posted a blog about this, which you can read here.

Tommy and his talented team then painted it up, added that lovely leather strap you see and made sure it all worked on set for the shoot itself. The fully assembled and painted up piece is here:

And finally the dagger as used in the shot itself.

I’m delighted with the result, and quite honestly, couldn’t have done it without ZBrush! Thanks again Pixologic!
